...Tests are conducted using models in which various fluid conditions are reproduced in a water tank (called a test tank) to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of ships and marine structures. They were first conducted in the late 19th century by the British William Froude (1810-1879) to study the performance of ships. Since there are limits to what can be explained by the theory of hydrodynamics, experimental investigations and research using water tank tests are essential for the development and design of ships and marine structures, the study of the motion of fluids themselves, and the identification of problems in theory and the construction of new theories.
