[What kind of disease is it?]
A boil is an infection of one pore, but a carbuncle begins with an infection deeper than a boil, so it affects multiple pores at once. The cause is also an infection of Staphylococcus aureus.
[Symptoms]
They often appear in areas where the skin is tense, such as the back of the neck, shoulders, buttocks, and thighs. Unlike boils, they are hemispherical swellings. At first, the pain is dull, but eventually becomes intense pain. The swelling starts out red, swollen, and hard, but as it progresses it softens and the multiple pores on the surface become pus-filled spots. Eventually, holes appear on part of the surface, through which the pus flows, and finally the destroyed tissue is expelled and the area heals.
[Treatment]
In severe cases, such as fatigue and fever, strong antibiotics are injected. The carbuncle is incised to drain the pus only after the affected area has softened. This is because if it is incised while still hard, the disease will spread.
In daily life, you should rest, and even today, if you have a carbuncle on your neck, you should take special care to prevent it. As for pus, you should take the same precautions as for a boil.
It is also important to get tested for any underlying diseases such as diabetes.

[どんな病気か]
　癤（せつ）は1つの毛孔（もうこう）の化膿（かのう）ですが、癰は癤より深い部分が感染して始まるため、複数の毛孔部をまとめておかします。原因はやはり黄色（おうしょく）ブドウ球菌（きゅうきん）の感染です。
[症状]
　くびのうしろ、肩、臀部（でんぶ）、大腿（だいたい）（太もも）など、皮膚の緊張が強いところによくできます。癤と異なり、半球状に盛り上がります。最初は鈍い痛みですが、やがて激しい痛みをともないます。盛り上がりは、最初は赤く張りきって硬いのですが、進行とともに軟らかくなり、表面の複数の毛孔が膿（うみ）をもった点になります。やがて表面の一部に穴があいて膿が流れ出し、最後は破壊された組織が排出され、治っていきます。
[治療]
　からだがだるい、熱が出るなどの重症例では強力な抗生物質を注射します。癰を切開して膿を出すのは患部が軟らかくなってからです。これは、硬いうちに切開すると病気が広がるためです。
　日常生活では安静にし、とくに癰がくびにできた場合は、今日でも注意深い養生が必要です。膿汁（のうじゅう）については、癤の場合と同様の注意をしてください。
　糖尿病などの基礎疾患の有無を検査してもらうこともたいせつです。
