A Study of Trade between China and the Barbarians

Japanese: 華夷通商考 - かいつうしょうこう
A Study of Trade between China and the Barbarians

Japan's first world commercial geography. Written by Nishikawa Joken. 2 volumes. Published in Kyoto in 1695 (Genroku 8). The first volume covers 15 Chinese provinces, while the second volume covers Asian countries such as Korea, Ryukyu, Taiwan, and Luzon, followed by the Netherlands and other foreign countries. It describes the route from Japan, location, climate, population, customs, and products of these countries, and was intended to serve as a reference for trade. In fact, the original source was the "Fudoki of Foreign Lands" (written in 1688) written by the secretary of Nagasaki interpreter Hayashi Doei. In 1708 (Hoei 5), Joken translated articles about America and other countries from Eijuryaku's "Shokuho Gaiki" into Japanese and published it as a five-volume book.
