Assistant

In 1952, he published his first novel, The Gifted, which depicted with unique pathos the story of a genius baseball player who falls from his fleeting glory due to various misfortunes. The protagonist's girlfriend's line, "It is hardship that leads us to happiness," is embodied in his representative work, The Assistant, published in 1957, as the protagonist endures hardships in the prison of a rundown grocery store. This novel won many awards, and together with the short story collection The Magic Barrel published the following year, it established Malamud's literary reputation.
