Umeiro (English spelling) Yellowtail Blue Snapper

Japanese: ウメイロ - うめいろ（英語表記）yellowtail blue snapper

A marine fish of the family Lutjanidae (illustration) in the order Perciformes. Its head and sides are pale purple-blue, and its back is yellow, so named because it resembles the color of a ripe plum. It inhabits warm waters and is found in the Izu Islands, Ogasawara, Wakayama Prefecture, and south of Shimane Prefecture, living on rocky reefs at depths of about 100 to 200 meters. Other species in the genus P. caeruleus include the Japanese blue snapper P. caeruleus , which is pale purple-blue all over, the striped blue snapper P. kusakarii , which has wide horizontal bands on its sides, and the rare blue-spotted blue snapper P. sordidus , which has very long tail fin lobes.

スズキ目フエダイ科の海産魚（イラスト）。頭部から体側部は淡紫青色，背部が黄色で，熟したウメの実に似た色なのでこの名がある。暖海性で伊豆七島，小笠原，和歌山県，島根県以南に分布し，100～200mくらいの深さの岩礁にすむ。　ウメイロ属にはほかに全身が淡紫青色のアオダイP.caeruleus，体側に幅の広い横帯が見られるシマアオダイP.kusakarii，尾びれ両葉がかなり長い稀種（きしゆ）ヨゴレアオダイP.sordidusがある。
