Nagasaki [city] - Nagasaki

Japanese: 長崎[市] - ながさき
Nagasaki [city] - Nagasaki
A city in the southern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. It is the prefectural capital. It occupies part of the Nishisonogi Peninsula and the entire Nagasaki Peninsula, including Iojima, Takashima, and Ikeshima in the sea. The central city spreads out on the slopes of the hills surrounding a long bay, and has developed rapidly since the arrival of a Portuguese ship in 1571. It is also called Kiyo. It was the oldest trading port in Japan and the center of Christian evangelism. After the isolationist order of 1639, it was the only window to the outside world, and Dejima, Tojinyashiki, and Nagasaki Kaisho were established, and it prospered through trade with the Netherlands and China. It declined after the country was opened to the world, but it developed especially after World War II, mainly due to the shipbuilding industry that began at the end of the Edo period. However, amid the structural recession since the 1980s, the city has been shifting to the machinery and electronics industries in recent years. The port is also one of Japan's leading fishing bases, and seafood processing and food industries are thriving. On the east coast facing Tachibana Bay are the fishing ports of Aba and Mogi. Specialties include mandarin oranges, castella cakes, dried mullet roe, pearls, tortoiseshell crafts, and Mogi loquats. On August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the Urakami district, reducing one-third of the city to ashes and resulting in 150,000 casualties. In 1995, the 50th anniversary of the bombing was celebrated, and the United Nations Conference on Disarmament was held as part of the commemorative events. The city is home to Christian historical sites such as the execution site of the 26 Martyrs and Oura Cathedral, Western-style buildings from the early Meiji period such as Glover House and No. 16 Building, the remains of Dejima and Chinese residences, Sofuku-ji Temple, Kofuku-ji Temple, Shofuku-ji Temple, Mt. Inasa, Mt. Kazegashira, the remains of Siebold's house (historic site), and Meganebashi Bridge. Annual events such as Peron and Suwa Shrine's Okunchi (Okuka) are also famous. Nagasaki University is located here. The city is accessible by the Nagasaki Main Line and the Nagasaki Expressway. In January 2005, the towns of Koyagi, Iojima, Takashima, Nomozaki, Miwa, and Sotome in Nishisonogi County were incorporated, and in January 2006, Kinkai in Nishisonogi County was incorporated. Area: 405.86 km2 . Population: 443,766 (2010).
