Usulu School

…The 17th century Akhbar school was known for its insistence on following this tradition and leaving no room for the interpretation of jurists. In the 18th century, the Usuli school, which asserted the right of interpretation of jurists (ijtihad), won the battle. As a result, the theory of the supreme authority (marjah-e taqlid) of jurists independent of dynastic rule was reaffirmed.
