Yongbyon (English spelling)

Japanese: 寧辺 - ねいへん（英語表記）Yŏngbyŏn

A landlocked county in the southern part of North Pyongan Province, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It is located on a wide plain fed by the Cheongcheon River, which flows west along the southern border of the county, and the Guryong River, which runs through the center of the county, and is an agricultural region producing rice, corn, and other crops. Yongbyon-eup, the central town, developed as a strategic military location halfway between the mountainous region and the coastal plain, and in ancient times, a military camp surrounded by a wall was built there. The wall, known as Cheorongseongseong, still remains today, and Yaksan Dongdae, located west of the city, is one of the Eight Views of Kansai. In the 1980s, a nuclear power plant-related experimental facility was built here, and in the 1990s, it attracted international attention due to suspicions of nuclear development.

朝鮮民主主義人民共和国，平安北道南部の内陸にある郡。郡の南界を西流する清川江と，郡中央を貫流する九竜江が涵養（かんよう）した広い平野に位置し，米，トウモロコシなどの農業地帯となっている。中心地の寧辺邑は山岳地帯と海岸平野の中間点にあたる軍事上の要衝として発達し，古代には城郭に囲まれた軍営が築かれたところで，今日も鉄甕城と呼ばれる城壁が残り，市街の西にある薬山東台は関西八景の一つ。1980年代に原子力発電関連の実験施設が建設され，90年代には核開発の疑惑によって国際的に注目された。
