Originally meaning "having a sense of beauty" or "aesthetic," the term referred to a movement that arose from the late 19th century to the early 20th century of wearing clothes in a style that followed the natural shape of the body, but today it has come to mean beautifying the whole body through beauty treatments. In Japan, aesthetic salons offering facial treatments, makeup, manicures, hair removal, weight loss, etc. appeared around 1972 and became popular in the late 1980s. Some salons also incorporate aromatherapy, which aims to provide a refreshing effect through the scents of nature, and thalassotherapy, which involves applying packs using seaweed and sea mud.
