Born in the 11th year of the Horeki era. He was the head priest of Gokurakuji Temple on Mount Kanaya in Kyoto, and was known as Kanaya Shonin. He is said to have studied the painting style of Yosa Buson. After traveling around the country, he settled in Nagoya, where he left behind the book "The Life of Kanaya Shonin," which describes his own wanderings and eccentricities. He also created pottery known as Kanaya ware. He passed away on January 10, 3rd year of the Tenpo era. He was 72 years old. He was from Omi (Shiga Prefecture). His Buddhist name was Myo-do.
