Vitruvius, an ancient Roman architect who transmitted the techniques and ideas of Greek architects, wrote Ten Treatises on Architecture around 30 BC, in which he summarized this in three principles of architecture: utility (utilitas), durability (firmitas), and beauty (venustas).
