Komachigoke - Komachigoke

Japanese: コマチゴケ - こまちごけ
Komachigoke - Komachigoke
A liverwort of the Komachigoke family. It is also called Chochingokemodoki. It is found mainly in the lowlands of western Japan, and is somewhat common on wet rocks and soily cliffs. The plant is pale green and soft and fleshy. The underground stem is well developed, but has no rhizoids. The aboveground stems grow obliquely upwards, and are 1-2 cm long. The leaves are arranged in three rows on both sides and the back of the stem, and are broadly ovate to kidney-shaped with entire margins. It is dioecious, and the archegonia and antheridia are exposed at the tip of the stem. The capsule is oblong and has a single vertical slit, from which spores are released. The name Komachigoke comes from the beautiful appearance of the plant, which resembles Ono no Komachi.
