A former town in Kitakatsuragi County in the northwest of Nara Prefecture. Located at the eastern foot of the Kongo Mountains, it is known for Taimadera Temple and Mt. Nijo. Flower cultivation is thriving, and it is especially famous as a producer of chrysanthemums. There are also hosiery and plastic factories, and sock manufacturing is thriving. The Kintetsu Minami-Osaka Line runs through the town. Taimadera Temple and Sekkoji Temple are famous for peonies. In October 2004, it merged with Shinjo Town in Kitakatsuragi County to form Katsuragi City. 15.96 km2 . 奈良県北西部,北葛城(きたかつらぎ)郡の旧町。金剛山地東麓にあり,当麻寺と二上(にじょう)山で知られる。花卉(かき)栽培が盛んで,特にキクの産地として有名。メリヤス,プラスチックなどの工場もあり,靴下の製造が盛ん。近鉄南大阪線が通じる。当麻寺や石光寺はボタンの名所。2004年10月北葛城郡新庄町と合併し,葛城市となる。15.96km2。1万5564人(2003)。
