A city in southern Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1943. The central area on the coast of Osaka Bay was established as a temple town within the Kaizuka Gobo Gansenji Temple in the Middle Ages, and prospered through the trade of Izumi cotton and combs. After the establishment of the Kaizuka Factory of Dai-Nippon Boseki (now Unitika) in 1934, it developed into a spinning industrial city, and is also a major producer of woven fabric and wire rope. It is served by the Hanwa Line, Nankai Electric Railway Main Line, and Hanwa Expressway. Rice cultivation using reservoir irrigation and onion cultivation are thriving in the northern foot of the Izumi Mountains. Mizuma Temple is located at the terminus of the Mizuma Railway, and Kotsumi Temple, famous for its nail-less hall, is located in Kotsumi. Area: 43.93 km2 . Population: 90,519 (2010). 大阪府南部の市。1943年市制。大阪湾岸の中心市街は,中世貝塚御坊願泉寺の寺内町として成立,和泉木綿と櫛(くし)の取引で繁栄した。1934年大日本紡績(現ユニチカ)貝塚工場の創設後,紡績工業都市として発展,織布,ワイヤロープの生産も多い。阪和線,南海電鉄本線,阪和自動車道が通じる。和泉山脈北麓は溜池灌漑(ためいけかんがい)による米作,タマネギ栽培が盛ん。水間鉄道の終点水間に水間寺,木積(こつみ)には釘無(くぎなし)堂で有名な木積寺がある。43.93km2。9万519人(2010)。
