The protagonist of the novel of the same name by Tomita Tsuneo. At the age of 17 in the early Meiji period, he moved to Tokyo from Aizu and continued his training in judo at the Kodokan of Yano Shogoro, becoming one of the Four Heavenly Kings. Sanshiro is said to have been modeled on Saigo Shiro of the Kodokan. The work was published in 1942 and made into a film by Kurosawa Akira the following year, with Fujita Susumu playing the role.
