Summer frenzy - Onatsukiyouran

Japanese:
Summer frenzy - Onatsukiyouran

A Kabuki dance drama. Tokiwazu. Lyrics by Tsubouchi Shoyo, music by Tokiwazu Mojibei II, choreography by Fujima Kan'emon II. It premiered in September 1914 (Taisho 3) at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo, with Ona played by Onoe Baiko VI and Matsumoto Koshiro VII. Based on the love story of Ona Seijuro, the play depicts Ona, who has gone mad after losing her lover Seijuro, wandering the country roads in autumn, with a rich poetic sentiment and pathos, featuring a village boy, a drunken horseman, and an elderly couple from Junrei. Shoyo, who advocated artistic reform of Japanese dance in "New Music Drama Theory," tried to put his theory into practice in this work, which was well received and became a representative work of the so-called new dance.
