Newport (English spelling)

Japanese: ニューポート(英語表記)Newport
Newport (English spelling)
An industrial and port city in southeast Wales, United Kingdom. It is a unitary authority. In Welsh, it is called Casnewydd. It is part of the former county of Monmouthshire. In 1974, it became part of the county of Gwent, and in 1996, it became a unitary authority. Newport is located about 20km northeast of Cardiff, on the north bank of the River Severn where the estuary of the river Severn meets the Bristol Channel, and faces the lowest reaches of the River Usk. The town was formed around a castle built in the early 12th century, and prospered in the Middle Ages with many royal charters. Its development as a modern city began in the 19th century, when industries such as steel, aluminum, and machinery developed in the coalfields behind it, which belong to the South Wales coalfields. It developed as a port for exporting coal and other industrial products. Although coal exports stopped in 1964, various industries were carried out in and around the city, and it developed as an industrial city. In particular, since the large Spencer Steelworks, built in Llanwearn in the eastern suburbs, began operations in 1962, it has become one of the UK's leading steel-making centres. Other industries include steel processing, papermaking and chemicals. There are few historical buildings, but St. Wools Cathedral was founded in Norman times and its 15th century tower still remains. There is a motorway bridge over the Severn Estuary and a railway tunnel connecting the area to London. Unitary municipality area: 190 km2 . Unitary municipality population: 139,600 (2005 estimate).

A port city in the southeastern part of Rhode Island, USA. It is located at the southern tip of the island. It was founded in 1639. It first flourished as a commercial port, competing with Boston and New York, but it declined due to evacuation during the American Revolutionary War, and revived as a summer resort after the Civil War. The Atlantic coast is lined with luxurious villas from the late 19th century. In 1852, MC Perry set sail from here with his black ships, calling for the opening of Japan to the world. It remains an important naval base, with naval facilities such as the naval arsenal, military academy, and submarine research center. It is also known as the venue for the Jazz Music Festival (1954-71) and yacht races. Population 28,227 (1990).

The seat of government on the Isle of Wight, an island in the English Channel in the south of England. It faces the innermost part of the estuary of the River Medina, which runs deep into the northern bay of the island. It is believed to have been the site of a Roman settlement known as Medina, and excavations have uncovered the remains of houses from that time, but no traces of the later Anglo-Saxon period remain. It was granted its first royal charter in the late 12th century and developed as a market town. It is a distribution centre for agricultural areas, bustling with trade with the mainland, and is home to factories producing plastics, woodworking, flour milling, beer brewing, mineral water, and more. Population: 22,957 (2001).
