It is a branch of Kabuki Kyogen and Ningyo Joruri. The truth behind this is unclear, but it is said to have been an incident that occurred in 1662 (Kanbun 2). Seijuro, a clerk at Tajimaya in Himeji, Banshu, had an affair with his master's daughter Onatsu. Onatsu ran away from home to pursue Seijuro, who had been dismissed, but she was eventually caught and Seijuro executed. This story was also sung in popular songs and became popular. There is a record of a Kabuki performance of this story at the Edo Nakamuraza in 1664. In January 1690 (Genroku 3), the Ichimura Kaori/Namie Kokanza in Osaka performed "Tajimaya Onatsu Seijuro 33rd Anniversary." It is believed that this work also influenced the Ningyo Joruri "Goju Nen Ki Uta Nembutsu" (50th Anniversary Song Nembutsu) written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon (before 1707, Takemotoza in Osaka).
