Paul Goodman
Born: September 9, 1911, New York
[died] August 2, 1972, North Stratford, New Hampshire. American novelist, psychoanalyst, and social critic. An extremely versatile and experimental writer, he was active in a wide range of fields, and is known for his critical writings based on anarchism and civil disobedience. In 1942, he published the novel The Grand Piano. He subsequently wrote social critiques such as Growing Up Absurd (1960), which deals with the contradictions faced by young people in America, based on his experiences as a psychoanalyst, as well as several plays, including Faustina (49), Gestalt Therapy (51), The Structure of Literature (54), and novels, such as The Empire City (59).

Goodman, Benny (Benjamin David)

[Died] June 13, 1986. New York American jazz clarinetist and orchestra conductor. He began his professional career at the age of 13, and joined the Ben Pollack Orchestra in 1925. In 1934, he formed his own orchestra, and appeared regularly on NBC Radio, winning popularity across the United States and earning the nickname "King of Swing." In 1938, he gave the first jazz concert in history at the classical music hall, Carnegie Hall, and has remained at the forefront of jazz ever since. In 1955, a biographical film was made in Hollywood. He was also well-known for his performances of classical music, and often performed with symphony orchestras. He visited Japan in 1958 and 1964.

[Died] November 25, 1998. Needham, Massachusetts. Contemporary American philosopher of science and language. He contributed to the theory of inductive logic, the structure of theories, the conciseness of logic, and the construction of a linguistic system related to such philosophical problems. His main work is "Fact, Fiction and Forecast" (1955).

アメリカのジャズ・クラリネット奏者,楽団指揮者。 13歳でプロ活動を始め,1925年ベン・ポラック楽団に参加。 34年には自己の楽団を結成,NBCラジオに定期的に出演して全米にわたる人気を獲得し,「キング・オブ・スイング」と呼ばれるにいたった。 38年にはクラシックの殿堂カーネギー・ホールで史上最初のジャズコンサートを行い,以後も常に第一線で活躍,55年にはハリウッドでその伝記映画が作られた。クラシック曲の演奏にも定評があり,交響楽団などとしばしば共演。 58,64年に来日。
