Tripos

… In the second half of the 18th century, a movement by some liberals to abolish the requirement to sign the Thirty-Nine Articles did not gain traction, and reforms were only initiated in the context of social change accompanying the Industrial Revolution. In 1824, classical studies were added to the tripos, an honors exam for graduation in mathematics, and in 1851 it was expanded to include natural sciences. With the intervention of Parliament, the requirement to sign the Thirty-Nine Articles was abolished in 1871, finally opening the university to non-conformists, the administration of the university was democratized, the number of professorships increased, and the university became more of a seat of academic research than an institution for training clergy. …
