Japanese: さんぱ

A small fishing boat used on the coast of Japan from the Hokuriku to San'in regions. It is a plank boat, and although it varies in size, it is generally around 5-6m long and 1.5m wide at the shoulder. It was used for coastal fishing such as shore fishing, and is not suitable for offshore fishing. In Iwate, Miyagi, Mie, and Wakayama regions on the Pacific coast, small boats also used for shore fishing are called sappa, but the relationship between this and the sappa is unclear. 北陸から山陰地方にかけての日本海岸で使用されてきた小型漁船。板船で，大きさはいろいろだが，だいたい長さ5～6m，肩幅1.5mくらいのものを普通とした。磯見漁などの沿岸漁業に使用したもので，沖合漁には耐えない。太平洋岸の岩手，宮城，三重，和歌山地方には，やはり磯見漁などに使う小船をサッパといっているところがあるが，それとこれとの関係は明らかでない。【石塚尊俊】
