A small fishing boat used on the coast of Japan from the Hokuriku to San'in regions. It is a plank boat, and although it varies in size, it is generally around 5-6m long and 1.5m wide at the shoulder. It was used for coastal fishing such as shore fishing, and is not suitable for offshore fishing. In Iwate, Miyagi, Mie, and Wakayama regions on the Pacific coast, small boats also used for shore fishing are called sappa, but the relationship between this and the sappa is unclear.
