Semi-independent princely states scattered throughout the Indian Empire under British rule. In the 1920s, there were 563 states, large and small, accounting for 45% of the total area of India and 24% of the population. They were individually subordinate to Britain and were granted autonomy as protectorates. After independence in 1947, they were either incorporated into the Union of India or Pakistan. The integration of the princely states of Kashmir became a source of conflict between the two countries.
