Onager (English spelling)

Also called the Onager or Persian wild ass. An elegant, odd-toed mammal of the Equidae family, similar to a donkey but with longer limbs. It is found in the arid regions of northeastern Iran, northwestern Afghanistan, and Turkestan. It was once considered an independent species, but in recent years many consider it to be a subspecies of the Asian wild ass E. hemionus (English name: Asiatic wild ass). It stands about 1.1m at the shoulder and weighs 200-250kg. Its body shape is intermediate between a donkey and a horse, with longer limbs and slightly shorter ears than a donkey. The long hair on its tail is limited to the tip, and its mane, which reaches from the nape of the neck to the withers, is short and stands upright.

オナガー，ペルシアノロバともいう。ロバに似て，より四肢が長い優美な奇蹄目ウマ科の哺乳類。イラン北東部，アフガニスタン北西部およびトルキスタンの乾燥地帯に分布。かつては独立種とされたが，近年はアジアノロバE.hemionus(英名Asiatic wild ass)の1亜種とみなす者が多い。肩高1.1m前後，体重200～250kg。ロバとウマの中間の体型で，ロバより四肢が長く，耳介がやや短い。尾の長毛は先半部に限られ，うなじから鬐甲（きこう）部に達するたてがみは短く直立する。
