Windhoek - Windhoek (English spelling)

The capital of Namibia, located in the central part of southwestern Africa. Population: 202,000 (1999), 325,858 (2011 census). In addition to about 30,000 white people of South African and German descent, the city is home to indigenous Africans such as Herero and mixed race people called Rehoboth Bastards. The town is located in a basin surrounded by hills, and on top of the hill is a fortress (now used as a museum) built during the German colonial period at the end of the 19th century. The town's downtown is called Kaiserstrasse, and the streetscape retains much of the atmosphere of the German colonial period. Major buildings include the government office, general post office, city hall, and Lutheran church, and the number of hotels is increasing. In the center of the town is a park called Furbultgarten, and on the south side of the town is the train station that leads to Cape Town. The town's memorials include a cross commemorating the war dead of World War I and a memorial to the Herero rebellion (1904-07).
