…The leader was Francisco Giner de los Ríos (1839-1915). He got the idea in 1875 while he was incarcerated in the Cadiz prison for university issues. Based on the theory of Julián Sanz del Río (1814-69), who introduced the ideas of the German philosopher Krause, he aimed to foster a driving force for social innovation by providing free and academic education to ordinary citizens without the church. Their activities were supported by the Spanish liberal faction from the beginning, but in 1882, they completely severed ties with the Ministry of Education. …
