Kozo Uno

Japanese:
Kozo Uno

A representative Marxist economist born in Japan. Born on November 12, 1897 in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Tokyo Imperial University in 1921 (Taisho 10). After studying in Germany, he became an assistant professor at Tohoku Imperial University, where he taught economic policy theory. Through his laborious work at that time, "Economic Policy Theory" (Part 1), he deepened his thoughts on the relationship between fundamental research in economics and policy theory. In 1938 (Showa 13), he was implicated in the so-called Popular Front Incident, and was indicted, but was found not guilty. In the end, he left the university in 1941 and moved to a private research institute. After World War II, he became a professor at the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, and continued his research on the theory of principles, while establishing an economic methodology that integrates the three areas of the theory of principles, the theory of stages, and current situation analysis. This is the so-called three-stage theory. This unique system, known as the Uno theory, had a great impact on the Marxist economics community in Japan from the perspective of clearly distinguishing ideology and social science, and at the same time, it was able to shed light on the debate on Japanese capitalism that had existed since before the war from a new methodological perspective. In addition to the above-mentioned works, his major works include "Principles of Economics" (1950, 1952), "Theory of Panic" (1953), and "Methodology of Economics" (1962). He passed away on February 22, 1977.
