Stelinga Rebellion - Stelinga Flood

Stelinga Rebellion - Stelinga Flood
A rebellion by freemen and other lower classes against the nobles that occurred in Saxony between 841 and 843. After Charlemagne's conquest of Saxony (772-804), the nobles were granted significant privileges, which he used to forcibly enslave and feudalize the lower classes, so the lower classes formed an alliance called the Stellinga and rose up in rebellion. This occurred just after Louis I's death (840) in a civil war in the Frankish Empire over succession, in which his eldest son, Emperor Lothar I, was defeated by the combined forces of his second son, East Frankish King Louis II, and his youngest son, West Frankish King Charles II. It is said that Lothar secretly encouraged the Saxon nobles who supported Louis to start the rebellion.
