A Catholic missionary from the Paris Foreign Missions Society who came to Japan at the end of the Edo period. Graduated from the Autun Seminary in France. Arrived in Naha in 1860. Landed in Yokohama in 1862, and moved to Nagasaki the following year where he worked hard to build Oura Cathedral. In 1865, he discovered hidden Christians for the first time in 250 years. He opposed the Yokohama Chinese translation due to the issue of church terminology and insisted on preserving the traditions of reverted Christians, publishing a version in Nagasaki that used Christian terminology; these are known as the Petitjean version. He worked hard to rescue Christians who were persecuted in the "Urakami Fourth Persecution." In 1866, he served as the Pope's representative and titular bishop for Japan. A pioneer in the re-evangelization of Catholicism in Japan. He passed away in Nagasaki and was buried in Oura Cathedral. He published the "Collection of Letters from Bishop Petitjean." <References> Genichi Eguchi, "Bishop Petitjean, Father of the Christian Revival"
