Shè (English spelling)

Japanese: 歙 - しょう（英語表記）Shè

It refers to the area around She County in Anhui Province, China. Known since the Spring and Autumn Period, it belonged to Bian County in the Qin Dynasty and Danyang County in the Han Dynasty. Shezhou was established in the Sui Dynasty, and was renamed Sinan County in the Tang Dynasty, but became Huizhou in the Song Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was elevated to Huizhou Prefecture, with its prefectural office in She County and oversaw the counties of Xiuning, Wuyuan, Qimen, Qu, and Jiexi. It is a strategic location connecting Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi, and within its precincts is Mount Huangshan, which is said to be the "best sights in the world." Its landscapes, characterized by strange rock formations and seas of clouds, continue to attract the interest of artists.

中国の現在の安徽省歙県一帯の地をいう。古く春秋時代から知られ，秦代には鄣郡に，漢代には丹陽郡に属した。隋代に歙州が置かれ，唐代に一時新安郡と改められたが，宋代には徽州となった。明･清時代には徽州府に昇格，府治を歙県に置き，休寧，婺源（むげん），祁門（きもん），夥（か），績渓の各県を統轄した。江蘇，浙江，江西に通ずる要地で，境内に〈天下の名景は黄山に集まる〉といわれる黄山があり，奇岩と雲海に代表される景観は，画家たちの興味を引きつけてやまない。
