The capital of the Yonne department in central France. Located on the left bank of the Yonne River, it flourished before the Gallo-Roman period and was the seat of a bishopric in the 3rd century. It is a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as St. Etienne Cathedral (13th to 16th centuries, especially famous for its 13th century stained glass). The city's main product is wine, and it also has food and wood industries. Population 40,597 (1990).
