A town in Kamimashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. The town is centered on the Kosa Basin in the midstream of the Midorikawa River. Paddy fields are laid out at the bottom of the basin, and on the outskirts, flower, vegetable, and leaf tobacco farming, sericulture, and dairy farming are carried out. There are silk-reeling and lumber factories, and sweet osmanthus trees (a natural monument) can be found in Asohara. Area: 57.93 km2 . Population: 11,181 (2010).
