A town in Kamimashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. The town is centered on the Kosa Basin in the midstream of the Midorikawa River. Paddy fields are laid out at the bottom of the basin, and on the outskirts, flower, vegetable, and leaf tobacco farming, sericulture, and dairy farming are carried out. There are silk-reeling and lumber factories, and sweet osmanthus trees (a natural monument) can be found in Asohara. Area: 57.93 km2 . Population: 11,181 (2010). 熊本県中央部，上益城(かみましき)郡の町。緑川中流の甲佐盆地が中心で，盆地底には水田が開け，周辺部では花卉(かき)，野菜，葉タバコの畑作，養蚕，酪農が行われる。製糸・製材工場があり，麻生原にはキンモクセイ（天然記念物）がある。57.93km2。１万1181人（2010）。
