[Molecular mechanism of genetic recombination]
F. Meselson and J. Weigle used λ phage with visible mutations, and furthermore, took advantage of the ability to change DNA density using non-radioactive isotopes ( 13C for 12C , 15N for 14N ) to show that genetic recombination (in this case, intrachromosomal recombination) occurs through DNA breakage and recombination (1961). Based on these research results, Meselson and CM Radding proposed the currently most widely accepted molecular mechanism of intrachromosomal recombination (Figure 1) (1975). The Meselson and Radding model has attracted attention because it can provide a unified explanation not only for intrachromosomal recombination but also for gene conversion. …
