Ishii Hakutei
Born: March 28, 1882 in Tokyo
[Died] December 29, 1958. Tokyo Western-style painter and art critic. Eldest son of Japanese painter Ishii Teiko. Real name Mitsuyoshi. Learned Japanese painting from his father from an early age, and later Western painting from Asai Chu. Entered the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1904, studying under Kuroda Seiki and Fujishima Takeji, but dropped out the following year due to eye disease. In 1907, exhibited "Abandoned Garden" at the Tokyo Industrial Exposition. Traveled to Europe from 1910 to 1920. After returning to Japan, his "Delayed Ship" won second prize at the 7th Bunten Exhibition in 1913. Founded the Japan Watercolor Association in the same year, and the Nikakai the following year. In 1935, he left the Nikakai and founded the Issuikai. After World War II, he exhibited oil paintings and watercolors at the Nitten Exhibition, and showed his own unique style with calm colors and light brushstrokes. He was a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and the Japan Art Academy, and served as a director and judge of the Nitten Exhibition. He is also the author of many books, including "Japanese Painting: The Three Generations" and "Hakutei Autobiography," among more than 20 others. His major works include "Dokuoto no Onna" (1912), woodblock print "Twelve Views of Tokyo" (around 1910-1916), and "The Pont Saint-Michel" (23, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo).

洋画家,美術評論家。日本画家石井鼎湖の長男。本名は満吉。幼時より父に日本画を学び,のち浅井忠に洋画を学ぶ。 1904年東京美術学校西洋画科に入学し,黒田清輝,藤島武二に師事したが翌年眼病のため中退。 07年東京府勧業博覧会に『廃園』を出品。 10年から翌々年まで渡欧。帰国後は,13年第7回文展の『滞船』が2等賞となった。同年日本水彩画会,翌年二科会を創立。 35年二科会を脱退して一水会を設立。第2次世界大戦後は日展に油絵,水彩画を発表,淡々とした色調と軽快な筆致で独自の画風を示した。帝国美術院会員,日本芸術院会員,日展理事と審査員をつとめた。著書も多く,『日本絵画三代志』『柏亭自伝』ほか 20冊余がある。主要作品『独乙の女』 (1912) ,木版『東京十二景』 (10~16頃) ,『サン・ミシェル橋』 (23,東京国立近代美術館) 。
