The town is located in Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture, and includes the southern part of Amami Oshima and the islands of Kakeroma, Uke, and Yoro to the south. It is mountainous, with settlements scattered along the ria coastline, the main settlement being Koniya at the southern tip of Amami Oshima. Sugarcane is cultivated, and Wagyu beef and pigs are raised, producing Oshima Tsumugi silk. Pearl, sea bream, and puffer fish farming are also thriving. 239.65 km2 . 9,874 people (2010). 鹿児島県大島郡，奄美(あまみ)大島南部とその南の加計呂麻(かけろま)島，請(うけ)島，与路(よろ)島などを含む町。山地が多く，リアス海岸に沿って集落が点在，主集落は奄美大島南端の古仁屋(こにや)。サトウキビ栽培，和牛・豚飼育が行われ，大島紬(つむぎ)を産する。真珠・タイ・フグ養殖も盛ん。239.65km2。9874人（2010）。
