Japanese: 山辺の道 - やまのべのみち
Yamanobe no michi - Yamanobe no michi

This 35-kilometer road runs north to south, slightly winding, along the western foot of the Yamato Plateau on the eastern edge of the Nara Basin in Nara Prefecture. It is said to be one of the oldest roads in Japan, running east of the ancient Kamitsu Road (the early modern Kamikaido), and its names remain on the tombs along the road, such as Yamanobe no Michi no Magari no Oka no He Tomb (the tomb of Emperor Sujin) and Yamanobe no Michi no He Tomb (the tomb of Emperor Keiko). It runs from Nara City south through Tenri City and Sakurai City to Hase Kaido, and along the road are, from the north, Ensho-ji Temple, Konin-ji Temple, Wanishita Shrine, Isonokami Shrine, Eikyu-ji ruins, Chogaku-ji Temple, ancient shrines and temples such as the tombs designated as the tombs of Emperor Sujin and Emperor Keikō, Hibara Shrine, Genpin-an, and Omiwa Shrine, as well as the huge ancient tomb of Hashibaka. Many parts overlap with the Tokai Nature Trail, and the Yamabe no Michi hiking course from the southern area of Isonokami Shrine to Miwa has excellent views of Mount Miwa and the three mountains of Yamato. The entire area is part of the Yamato Aogaki Quasi-National Park.
