A climbing woody plant of the legume family (illustration). Its brilliant red beans are used for necklaces and other items. Its English names are black-eye susan, Indian licorice, and rosary pea. It grows into a small climbing tree, reaching a height of 3-5m. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound, about 10cm long, with 7-15 pairs of elliptical leaflets. Pale purple flowers grow densely in racemes at the ends of short axillary branches. The flowers are butterfly-shaped and about 1cm long. マメ科のつる性木本(イラスト)。輝くような紅色の豆がネックレスなどに用いられる。英名はblack‐eye susan,Indian licorice,rosary pea。つる性の小高木になり,高さ3~5m。葉は奇数羽状複葉で,長さ10cmほど,楕円形の小葉は7~15対ある。腋生(えきせい)する短い枝の先端の総状花序に密集して,淡紫色の花をつける。花は長さ1cmあまりの蝶形花。果実は長さ3cmほどの豆果で,紅色の種子を3~6個いれる。
