Spalax

…General term for a mammal of the genus Spalax in the family Muridae and order Rodentia, which resembles a mole (order Insectivora) in both appearance and habits. Five species are found in the area from southeastern Europe to Greece and the Volga River, on the plains north of the Caspian Sea and the Balkan Peninsula, and from Asia Minor to Egypt and northern Libya.
