Azukinashi - Azuki-nashi

Japanese: アズキナシ - あずきなし
Azukinashi - Azuki-nashi

It is a deciduous tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae), and can grow up to 20 meters tall. The branches are purple-brown and dotted with white lenticels. The leaves are alternate, ovate or elliptical, 5-10 cm long, with 8-10 pairs of lateral veins, and occasionally 13 pairs, with double serrated edges. In May and June, it produces white, five-petaled flowers measuring 1-1.5 cm in diameter. The fruit is elliptical and ripens red in autumn. It was named after the shape and size of the fruit. It is also called hakari-no-me, as the white lenticels dotted on the branches resemble the eyes of a set of scales. It is found widely in the mountainous areas of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is also distributed in Korea, China, and the Ussuri region. The wood is hard and is used for construction and furniture.
