Louis Renou

A French Indologist. He obtained his doctorate in 1925, and after serving as a professor at the University of Lyon and other institutions, he became a professor at the Sorbonne in 1937. He was appointed director of the Maison Franco-Japonica in Tokyo from 1954 to 1956. His main specialization was the philological study of the Vedas, particularly the Rig-Veda, and the elucidation of Indian grammar (Vyākarana) by Panini and others. He produced many works, including the unfinished Study of the Vedas and Panini (1955-66) and a translation of Panini's Ashtadyaī (1948-54).

フランスのインド学者。1925年に学位を得，リヨン大学教授などを経て，37年ソルボンヌの教授となる。54‐56年には日仏会館館長として東京に赴任した。専門の中心はベーダ，とくに《リグ･ベーダ》の文献学的研究と，パーニニをはじめとするインド文法学(ビヤーカラナ)の解明とにあった。未完の《ベーダ･パーニニ研究》(1955‐66)をはじめ，パーニニの《アシュタードヤーイー》の翻訳(1948‐54)など多くの業績を残した。
