Fishing hook - Fishing line

Japanese:
Fishing hook - Fishing line

The title of a Kyogen piece. Tarokaja Kyogen. In the Okura school, it is called Mukoonna Kyogen. A man from around here takes Tarokaja (shite) to Ebisu in Nishinomiya to ask for a wife (praying to the gods and Buddhas to get a wife), and receives a message in a dream that he is given a fishing rod to catch his wife. He happily takes it home and lets the knight fish. The knight goes to the bridge while singing and dancing, "Go fish, go fish..." and throws the fishing hook into the curtain, and his wife wearing a robe comes out. He then fishes the ladies-in-waiting, and then he fishes out his own wife. After the masters of the house go inside to have their wedding ceremony, the knight takes off the robe of the woman who will become his wife, but she is so ugly (wearing a Otsu mask) that he pushes down the woman who is admiring him and runs away. The above is the story of the Izumi school, but in the Okura school, the man is given a fishing hook with which he can catch any fish, and after reeling in a sword or other fish, he catches the master's wife and several ladies-in-waiting and maids. After the master and his wife enter, he tries to pick out any woman he likes, but they are all ugly.

This piece was adapted into a kabuki dance piece, "Ebisu-mo-de-koi-no-tsuribari" (commonly known as "Tsurionna"), by Tokiwazu. The piece was originally written in 1883 (Meiji 16) by Kawatake Mokuami as lyrics and composed by Kishizawa Shikisa VI, and premiered by Ichikawa Ennosuke I at the Tokyo-za Theatre in 1901 (Meiji 34).
