The Gospels were decorated in the Hiberno-Saxon style by Christian monks in Scotland and Ireland in the 8th and 9th centuries. They are thought to have been finally completed in Kells, Ireland. They are currently housed in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. The text is the Vulgate by St. Jerome, but it was copied by several different hands. Each page features decorative lettering with strong Celtic features such as spirals, bracken handwriting, S-shaped flowing lines, and animal heads, as well as full-page illustrations, portraits of the Gospel writers and their symbols such as lions, bulls, and eagles, and three scenes from the life of Christ, making them a representative work of medieval art.
