Born: June 18, 1905, St. Petersburg [Died] November 26, 1967. Paris Soviet dancer and choreographer. In 1922 he joined the State Opera and Ballet (later the Kirov Ballet) and played leading roles such as Siegfried in Swan Lake. In 1930, he composed Symphonic Etudes for the graduation performance of the Leningrad Ballet School, which was praised for its freshness. He then created The Four Seasons (1931), Fadetta (1934), Katerina (1935), and Prisoner of the Caucasus (1937), and showed a stronger tendency toward theatrical and psychological ballets. He served as director of the Kirov Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet, and presented dramatic ballets such as Romeo and Juliet (1940), The Stone Flower (1954), and The City by Night (1961). In 1965 he was named People's Artist of the USSR. His son Mikhail won first prize at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 1965, became N. Besmertnova's partner at the Bolshoi Theater, and became artistic director of the Tiflis Ballet in 1985.
