Moonlight Bodhisattva

Japanese:
Moonlight Bodhisattva

He is the attendant of Medicine Buddha, and forms a pair with Nikko Bodhisattva. Gekko is a translation of the Sanskrit word Candra-prabha. This pair of Nikko and Gekko is seen on the relic container of King Kanishka excavated from Peshawar, Pakistan, with the king in between, and the coins of King Fuviska show a pair of the moon god (Mao) and the sun god (Miiro). In Japan, the statues of Gekko Bodhisattva in the Hokke-do Hall of Todai-ji Temple and the Kondo Hall of Yakushi-ji Temple are famous. These two statues do not have any particular depiction of the moon, but the statue at Koryuji Temple has a crescent moon on the lotus flower it is holding. The crescent moon can also be seen in the depictions of esoteric Buddhism mandalas. The crescent moon motif already appears in the statues of gods and emperors on Kushan coins.
