In 1907, the Committee to Investigate the Origins of Baseball was formed with six members, including President Mills of the National League of America as chairman. It is said that the committee was formed at the request of Albert Goodwill Spalding (1850-1915), a former pitcher who was the largest sports equipment dealer in America at the time. The committee concluded that baseball originated in America, was invented by Major General Abner Doubleday in 1839, and that the first game was played in Cooperstown, a suburb of New York State.
