European coffee shops, which became popular along with coffee, originated in West Asia. Cafes and coffee houses, which emerged in France and England in the 17th century, played particularly important social, cultural, and political functions. French cafes were introduced from Turkey and spread via Marseilles (1654), and although there are other theories, it is said that the first cafe in Paris was opened by the Armenian Pascal in 1672.
