Shinpei Ogura

Korean linguist. Born in Sendai. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University. In 1911 (Meiji 44), he traveled to Korea to study the Korean language, and in 1926 (Taisho 15), he became a professor at Keijo Imperial University, and in 1933 (Showa 8), he also held the position of professor at Keijo Imperial University. He made many achievements in historical research of the Korean language, and established the foundation for scientific research of the language. His major works include the unique text commentary "A Revised History of Korean Linguistics" (1940), the pioneering work in ancient language research "Studies on Folk Songs and Readings" (1929), which won the Imperial Academy Prize, "Honorific and Humble Auxiliaries in the Korean Language" (1938), a historical study of honorific suffixes, and "Studies on Korean Dialects" (1944), which is a collection of valuable materials and research from his explorations of the whole of Korea.

朝鮮語学者。仙台出身。東京帝国大学文科大学卒業。1911年（明治44）朝鮮語研究のため朝鮮に渡り、1926年（大正15）京城(けいじょう)帝国大学教授、1933年（昭和8）東京帝国大学教授となり、京城帝国大学教授を兼任した。朝鮮語の歴史的研究に多くの業績を残し、朝鮮語の科学的研究の基礎を確立した。主著に、ユニークな資料解題である『増訂朝鮮語学史』（1940）、古代語研究の嚆矢(こうし)であり、学士院恩賜賞を受賞した『郷歌(きょうか)及び吏読(りとう)の研究』（1929）、敬語法接辞の史的研究である『朝鮮語に於(お)ける尊敬法・謙譲法の助動詞』（1938）、朝鮮全土を踏査した貴重な資料と研究からなる『朝鮮語方言の研究』（1944）などがある。
