Melton (English spelling)

Japanese: メルトン（英語表記）melton

A type of woolen fabric. It is woven in a plain or twill weave using soft, thick woolen yarn for the warp and weft, then shrunk and the nap on the surface of the fabric is cut short and brushed (melton processing). The surface looks like it is covered with nap. The fulling effect increases the fabric's thickness, elasticity, and heat retention. It is dyed in plain black or striped or marbled patterns and is used for cold weather clothing such as overcoats, cloaks, women's and children's clothing, and uniforms. Worsted melton is also used when worsted yarn is used and the melton finish is applied.

毛織物の一種。太番手の柔らかい紡毛糸を経緯に使って，平織，斜文織変化組織に織り上げ，縮絨加工をして，布面の毳 (けば) を短く刈取り，ブラシかけをする (メルトン加工) 。表面が毳でおおわれたように見える。縮絨効果により厚さを増し，弾性に富み，保温性が大。黒無地あるいは縞柄や霜降りに染めて，オーバー，マント，婦人子供服，制服などの防寒用服地として用いられる。また梳毛 (そもう) 糸を使い，メルトン仕上げをしたものを，ウーステッドメルトンという。
