A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). It grows a flower stalk from a spindle-shaped tuberous root to a height of 15-40 cm. It has one oval leaf near the center of the stem, and the upper leaves are smaller. Around July, it produces 3-10 sparse flowers on the terminal inflorescence. The flowers are pale green and about 1 cm in diameter. The lateral petals open to the left and right, and have a long, thin spur about 1 cm long. It grows on the forest floor, forest edges, and marshes of the subalpine zones of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, and is distributed in the southern Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. The closely related P. takedae Makino looks very similar, but has a shorter spur, less than 4 mm long.
