It is a member of the order Decapoda and family Polytrichum communes. Its carapace is approximately 60cm wide and weighs over 10kg. It has a light brown base with irregular dark reddish brown patterns. Its carapace is elongated and oval, with a shiny surface that curves forward and backward. The stomach, heart, liver, and gill regions are separated by shallow grooves. The anterior edge of the carapace consists of four lobes, each with two to three teeth. The chelicerae are not the same, with one side being enlarged. Its carapace is larger than that of the Japanese spider crab, but its walking legs are clearly shorter. It is found only in the waters off the coast of Tasmania in southeastern Australia, from the island to the southern part, and is edible. It is generally found at depths of 100 to 180m.
