Cuttack
kathak

It is one of the four great classical dances of India (→ Indian dance), handed down mainly in the Ganges basin in northern India. Like Kathakali, it has its origin in "story" and is a dance that mainly depicts the story of Lord Krishna and the cowherd women Gopis. There are two schools, Jaipur and Lucknow. It was originally a religious dance performed in temples, but in the 16th century it was adopted by the Mughal Empire's court dance and became an Islamic-style, aristocratic and elegant dance. It features a variety of nrittas (meaningless movements), such as fast-paced stomping and spinning with bells attached to the ankles, and a form in which the movement is stopped for a moment in contrast.
